Taxis, autorickshaws stay off roads in Mumbai

Thousands of taxis and autorickshaws stayed off the roads here on Thursday in response to a day-long strike to protest the government's decision to phase out taxis over 25-years old.

The Union has given the strike call to protest the Maharashtra government's decision to phase out taxis which are over 25-years old, besides other issues.

The phasing out of the existing taxis, a majority of which are of the 'Premier Padmini' make, was wrong since the emission norms prescribed were being met by the vehicles, the Union said.

It also alleged the phasing out scheme was a ploy which allowed "some persons" to take money from taxi drivers.

Despite the Maharashtra government forming a committee to look into the issue and other matters like introduction of electronic meters in autorickshaws, no solution has been worked out yet.

Other demands of the Union include a hike in fares, making electronic meters optional, exemptions from paying toll tax and professional tax for taxi drivers, abolition of fleet taxis and providing facilities for taxi drivers at city airports.

making electronic meters optional-: So that these bhais can loot people more.No it shoudl not be made these bhais will found out way even to cheat in this.

exemptions from paying toll tax and professional tax for taxi drivers:- Why they are doining this for charity or what. When every citizen is paying tax. Why special treatment require. There are many mumbaikar who somehow through loans buy their dream car even they are poor people, given exemptions to them.

abolition of fleet taxis and providing facilities for taxi drivers at city airports.:-At least fleet taxis are taking money and giving the worth of the money in service and quality travel.Airport is the place were these people robbed in daylight. It is cheating openely. Its is not bihar its mumbai, but they want to run taxi on fix rate rather then meter. Airport is the ground of cheaters were taxis and autorikshaw walas cheat and harrassed people.

The striking union members are expected to meet Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil, Transport Commissioner and other authorities regarding their resolutions and demands.
